When Catherine and Tyler began planning their wedding, they knew one thing for certain: they wanted their wedding day to feel like them.
As two people who call Western North Carolina home, the mountains and outdoors have always been an important part of their lives. Rather than choosing a traditional ballroom or formal wedding setting, they wanted a place where they could slow down, spend meaningful time with the people they love most, and celebrate their marriage surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains.
Their search led them just across the Tennessee border to White Fence Farm, a beautiful and private farm wedding venue surrounded by rolling hills, open pastures, wooded mountainsides, wildflowers, and the peaceful sounds of nature.
The result was an intimate, organic, and incredibly intentional mountain wedding that focused less on elaborate details and more on creating an experience that allowed Catherine and Tyler to truly enjoy their wedding day with their closest family and friends.
A Western North Carolina Couple Celebrates in the Mountains
For couples planning a wedding in Western North Carolina, one of the greatest advantages of a mountain wedding is the opportunity to make the landscape part of the celebration.
Catherine and Tyler wanted to embrace that feeling completely.
Their wedding took place in July, and while summer weddings in the Southeast can certainly bring warm temperatures, choosing a location in the high country offered a much more comfortable outdoor setting. The surrounding mountains, open fields, and natural landscape created a beautiful backdrop for their ceremony and wedding portraits without requiring an elaborate ceremony installation.
It was exactly what they had envisioned: an outdoor mountain wedding surrounded by the people who mattered most.
From the beginning, their priorities were family, connection, and enjoying the day together. Every planning decision reflected those priorities.
The Venue: White Fence Farm
White Fence Farm is a rustic and private farm wedding venue situated on approximately 105 acres just across the Tennessee border. The property offers couples an incredible combination of open countryside and mountain scenery, making it a beautiful option for couples searching for a rustic mountain wedding venue near Boone, Blowing Rock, Asheville, and Western North Carolina.
The property includes bubbling springs, a fish pond, pastures, hiking trails, vintage farm equipment, wildflowers, and tree-covered mountain views. Rather than feeling like a highly developed event space, the property allows the surrounding landscape to remain the star.
For Catherine and Tyler, that was exactly what they wanted.
The natural surroundings provided nearly everything they needed to create a beautiful wedding atmosphere.
The rustic barn served as the primary reception space. Complete with a bar and stage for entertainment, the barn can accommodate approximately 80–100 guests and includes electricity, water, and bathrooms. Couples can also rent additional event tents, ceremony chairs, farm tables, and wooden benches.
For larger weddings, a tent can be placed adjacent to the barn to provide additional seating and reception space.
One of the things that makes a property like White Fence Farm especially appealing for a mountain wedding is the flexibility. Couples can create a celebration that feels highly personalized rather than being limited to a predetermined wedding design.
Mountain Wedding Lodging and a Weekend Experience
Another wonderful feature of White Fence Farm is the opportunity for guests to stay on the property.
The classic 1940s farmhouse offers a cozy place to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Details such as a white-clad iron tub, porch swing, and Vermont wood stove give the farmhouse a distinctly charming and nostalgic character.
Additional lodging options include vintage and Airstream campers, as well as tent camping and RV hookups.
For couples who want to create more than just a single wedding day, this type of property can be an especially wonderful fit. A mountain wedding can become an entire weekend experience, giving family and friends the opportunity to spend additional time together before and after the ceremony.
A Simple and Delicious Farm Wedding Menu
Catherine and Tyler's wedding menu was designed to be approachable, comforting, and perfect for a relaxed outdoor celebration.
Plain & Simple Catering and Event Planning provided the food for their wedding. Although the caterer has since relocated to the coast and is no longer serving the Western North Carolina area, their menu is still worth highlighting because it perfectly complemented the overall feeling of the wedding.
Guests enjoyed a stationary grazing board during cocktail hour featuring seasoned BBQ meatballs, sundried tomato basil pinwheels, and an assortment of fresh fruit.
Dinner was served buffet-style and included creamy Tuscan chicken, sheet pan pork chops, vegetable lasagna, roasted potatoes, seasoned vegetables, dinner salad, and rolls.
Dessert included chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin pies, and apple pies.
But perhaps the most personal dessert detail was the wedding cake.
Catherine baked and decorated her own wedding cake.
There was something especially meaningful about that detail. In a wedding filled with intentional choices, creating her own cake was another way for Catherine to personally contribute to the celebration.
It wasn't about perfection or creating something extravagant.
It was about making something herself for the people she loved.
An Organic and Sustainable Wedding Design
The design of Catherine and Tyler's wedding was one of my favorite aspects of the day.
Their aesthetic was organic, intentional, and sustainable.
Instead of purchasing large quantities of disposable wedding décor simply because it was expected, they focused on elements that could be reused, repurposed, or enjoyed beyond the wedding day.
They even handmade their own yard games and other decorative elements.
This approach is a wonderful reminder that a beautiful wedding does not have to be built around single-use décor.
For couples planning a rustic, outdoor, or eco-conscious mountain wedding, there are so many opportunities to incorporate sustainability into the design. A Thoughtfully Planned Wedding Day
Although the wedding itself felt relaxed, the day was carefully planned behind the scenes.
That is one of the things I love most about working on weddings: a wedding can feel effortless to the couple and their guests because there is a thoughtful plan supporting everything happening behind the scenes.
Catherine and Tyler were intentional from day one about what they wanted their wedding experience to feel like.
The timeline allowed plenty of time for family photographs, portraits, downtime, and simply being present.
Photography began early in the afternoon, giving Catherine time to get dressed and capture photographs with her family and the venue before guests arrived. Tyler arrived later for photographs with his family.
The ceremony began at 4:00 p.m., followed by cocktail hour, family photographs, and newlywed portraits.
The couple then transitioned into their reception with toasts, dinner, cake cutting, their first dance, parent dances, and sunset portraits.
The timing of the day also allowed the couple to take advantage of the natural mountain landscape as the sun began to set.
Their sunset was scheduled for approximately 8:37 p.m., creating another opportunity for beautiful photographs without having to manufacture a backdrop. The mountains and evening sky did all the work.
An Outdoor Mountain Wedding Ceremony
Catherine and Tyler exchanged vows at the foot of the rolling Tennessee hills, surrounded by pastures, blue skies, and the natural beauty of the property.
Guests sat on wooden benches facing the hillside.
There was no need to compete with the scenery.
The landscape itself became the ceremony décor.
This is one of the reasons mountain weddings are so special. When you choose a venue with breathtaking natural surroundings, your ceremony can be incredibly simple while still feeling spectacular.

July can be challenging for an outdoor wedding in much of the Southeast, but a higher-elevation setting can offer a more comfortable environment.

They chose a beautiful outdoor setting. They focused on family. They incorporated handmade details. They embraced sustainability. Catherine baked her own cake. And they created a timeline that gave them room to actually experience their wedding day rather than rushing from one scheduled event to the next.
That intentionality is what made their wedding so beautiful.
